Library faculty meetings generally don’t stir much debate, but today’s meeting was one that left a lot for our folks to think about.
We’re just beginning discussion of whether we need to require an MLS for a tenure-track librarian position. We’ve learned that a ‘terminal’ degree is not required for tenure-track positions at the university. We know of other units on campus that place individuals in the tenure track without the terminal degree. Why should we hold on to “the degree” if it keeps us from hiring people with the skills we need?
