Tornado hits Manhattan

It could have been worse. The tornado (or tornadoes?) touched down between 10:30-11 on the west side of Manhattan near the airport, then pounded businesses along one of the main thoroughfares. It destroyed the Waters True Value Hardware Store and heavily damaged a car dealership, muffler place, and the gym where Jen used to work. Then it bounced and did major roof, window and tree damage through a heavily populated area just to the west of campus. Campus buildings sustained $20 million in damages (at least as of reports at noon today). Campus is closed today. No reports of deaths or severe injuries in Manhattan. I’ve posted a few pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kstatelibrarian/2573526270/in/photostream/

The east side of Manhattan where I live was spared. Tinkerbell the cat wasn’t too happy cooped up in the hallway closet with me for 25 minutes…

Update 2:54pm: more photos (including mine) here…

5:22pm update: photos from campus media here…
