on Asheville…

Oh, NASIG, just wait! June is still months away but NASIGers need to mark their calendars now for the 24th annual conference in June ’09. Asheville will be a delightful conference city! Our conference hotel and the overflow hotel are right downtown and a block away from fantastic shopping and dining. And, of course, NASIG always has great programming and networking opportunities. Serialists & e-resources folks, anyone involved in any aspect of the serials information chain — this is where you need to be!

The NASIG Board was in Asheville last week for a very productive fall board meeting. We had updates from the conference & program planning folks and discussed items such as new awards, building more transparency in our elections processes, hiring paid staff, new logo designs, the website implementation, and site possibilities for our 25th anniversary! Watch for minutes of that meeting in the Newsletter later this fall.

I know that by June I will forget where we ate dinner, so I’ll make note of those now! Highly recommended:
the Flying Frog Cafe and Vincenzo’s. And don’t forget the Chocolate Fetish for something sweet to eat–how about some wasabi with your chocolate? A very interesting combination and delicious!

We were too early to enjoy the famous fall colors of the mountains but, because several of us actually flew into Charlotte and rented a car, we did get to drive through the mountains a bit! The weather wasn’t the greatest the day we flew in so we didn’t get the grand vistas, but it still reminded me of childhood trips from Spartanburg, SC to Asheville in pre-interstate days. Driving through the clouds. How cool is that?!

  1. Those restaurants were great! Since I drove to Asheville and didn’t have to make a plane connection, I spent the morning after the board meeting in Malaprop’s Bookstore (www.malaprops.com) and exploring Grove Arcade, a historic public market (www.grovearcade.com/). Also both recommended.
