Save the words!

Spotted this over on LibGig: 24 Endangered Words. The folks who publish Collins English Dictionaries want to remove 24 words from their dictionary to make room for other words.

Since I can honestly say I have never used any of the words they want to remove, ignore my subject line! But, I do rather like the sound of “skirr”.  No problem. It’s still in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), which according to their website:

“… is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations…”.

I actually needed the origin of a word for a story I am working on that takes place in the 12th century.  Do you know that the word “governor” apparently wasn’t used until the 14th-15th century! Got that straight from OED!
