I have been climbing up the mountain for over 2 years. I am at the summit! The climax. This is the turning point where the conflict I’ve built in the previous 85,000 words will be resolved! I began work on chapter 25 of my novel on Oct. 8. I had a rough draft 8 days later and put the final touches on this first draft on the 29th. It’s sitting at ~4500 words. (Please do not remind me about NaNoWriMo, which began Nov. 1! 1,657 words a day, every day for a month? Nope, not going to happen from me – at least not until I retire!)
So chapter 25 will sit for a couple of weeks. Then I’ll read it with fresh eyes, give it one more edit. Chapters 23 & 24 will keep me busy in the meantime. Both need a final going over before writers group sees them.
What’s my view from the summit? I see all those words scattered behind me and hope a reader or two will be intrigued when they open chapter 1 and follow the journey. More than anything, I want this story to exceed their expectations, to surprise them, to make them laugh, and to make them cry.
